Dear Food Diary #12: Our Cooking Stories

Dear Food Diary, This special entry will be about food that we cooked, food that we shared together with friends and hosts, and stories that came with each meal. Cooking has been an important part of our lives – particularly baking – that we missed a lot. We can only carry so much spices and ingredient to make basic meals, so when a kitchen presents … Continue reading Dear Food Diary #12: Our Cooking Stories

The Difficult Life of Refugees

Ever since we entered Iran, we started noticing the discrimination towards foreigners – not tourists but migrants from neighbouring countries. It has been a consistent pattern in each country that has accepted refugees or migrants. For example, the Iranians spoke very poorly about Afghans living in their country, and the Turkish generally blamed Syrian refugees for taking their jobs. We have several stories to share … Continue reading The Difficult Life of Refugees

1984 in 2018

Pheng first heard about George Orwell’s 1984 book in social studies class at Edgewater College. At that time, his interests were mainly naming countries and their capital city. In this journey through Asia, we engaged with many people discussing the political situation, internal affairs and the daily struggles. We’ll compare experiences of our journey to that in Mr Orwell’s book. It may help if you … Continue reading 1984 in 2018

Turkey’s Report Card

Dear Food Diary #9: South & East Turkey

Dear Food Diary, Ironically we haven’t tried any dish made from the turkey bird, but the people here probably don’t realize the link between the English word for turkey and the name of their country. So we’ve learned that each city has their own special dish or dessert, so we’ll share the ones we’ve been introduced to by the many friends we’ve met. The name … Continue reading Dear Food Diary #9: South & East Turkey

Waking up for the Anzac Dawn Service

Finally we set foot on Europe (technically) as we stepped off the ferry onto the Gallipoli Peninsula. Since we didn’t come with our bikes it didn’t count as “having made it to Europe”. 24 April 2019 6 pm Our ferry docked and we headed towards the other side of the peninsula. It is a 10 km walk to get to the Anzac memorial site. Security … Continue reading Waking up for the Anzac Dawn Service

Hitchhiking to Anzac Cove

We thought about visiting the Anzac Services in Turkey, but didn’t think we would be in Turkey in April. With one week left before April 25th, we were only halfway across Turkey. It was decided that we would go by hitchhiking via the southern coast and up towards Çanakkale. This city is where everyone in Turkey remembers their world war soldiers too. 21/4/2019: Mersin to … Continue reading Hitchhiking to Anzac Cove
