We’ve arrived in Turkey’s biggest city İstanbul after cycling through some scenic and magical places. We arrived on June 5th after cycling a further 2590 km, bringing our total to 16945 km. On this route we saw numerous policeman, deep blue Mediterranean Sea, and magical hot air balloons.

ពួកយើងបានមកដល់ទីក្រុងធំជាងគេរបស់ទួរគី គឺទីក្រុងអ៊ីស្តានប៊ុល (Istanbul) ក្រោយការជិះកង់ឆ្លងកាត់តំបន់ដែលមានទេសភាពប្លែក និងអស្ចារ្យមួយចំនួន។ ពួកយើងបានមកដល់នៅថ្ងៃទី ០៥ មិថុនា ក្រោយធ្វើដំណើរចម្ងាយ២៥៩០គីឡូម៉ែត ដែលគិតជាចម្ងាយសរុបទាំងអស់ បាន១៦៩៤៥គីឡូម៉ែត។ នៅតាមផ្លូវនេះ ពួកយើងបានឃើញប៉ូលីសជាច្រើននាក់ សមុទ្រមេឌីទែរ៉ាណេដ៏ខៀវងងឹត និងបាឡុងខ្យល់ក្តៅដ៏ល្អប្លែក។

Hooray we’ve finished Part 3 Middle East, now onto Europe

Sensitive Region តំបន់ចម្រូងចម្រាស

After leaving Iraqi Kurdistan we entered a region in Turkey which had a heavy police present. The southern border along Syria also had military checkpoints at every towns. In some cities we visited, we were told that half the city were bombed or destroyed only 3 or 4 years before!

The timing of our visit wasn’t so good either. In combination with the local elections and the Christchurch’s mosque tragedy, being a New Zealander for the first time felt unsafe. We had several instances where a policeman plainly said they “didn’t like NZ”. The officer probably knew little about the event besides the headline from the newspaper.

It was very awkward everytime we mentioned we were New Zealanders. Imagine someone starting a conversation with “in your country my Muslim brothers got killed in a shooting”. We tried explaining that our country is diverse and full of different ethnicities.

ក្រោយពេលចាកចេញពីតំបន់កឺឌីស្តាន ប្រទេសអ៊ីរ៉ាក់ ពួកយើងបានចូលមកដល់តំបន់មួយនៅប្រទេសទួរគី ដែលទីនោះមានវត្តមានប៉ូលីសយ៉ាងច្រើនកកកុញ។ នៅតំបន់ព្រំដែនភាគខាងត្បូងជាប់ជាមួយប្រទេសស៊ីរី ក៏មានប៉ុស្តិ៍ទាហានត្រួតពិនិត្យនៅគ្រប់ភូមិ។ នៅទីក្រុងមួយចំនួនដែលយើងបានឆ្លងកាត់ ពួកយើងត្រូវបានអ្នកស្រុកប្រាប់ថា ពាក់កណ្ដាលនៃទីក្រុង ត្រូវបានបំផ្លាញដោយគ្រាប់បែក កាលពីបី ទៅបួនឆ្នាំមុន!

ពេលវេលានៃការធ្វើដំណើររបស់យើងក៏មិនសូវជាល្អប៉ុន្មានដែរ។ ការបោះឆ្នោតក្នុងប្រទេស បូករួមនឹងសោកនាដកម្មវិហារចាមនៅ ក្រៃឈឺជ (Christchurch) ធ្វើឲ្យពួកយើងមានអារម្មណ៏ថាមិនមានសុវត្ថិភាព ជាលើកទីមួយក្នុងនាមជាជនជាតិញូសៀលេន (New Zealand)។ មានករណីខ្លះទៀត ប៉ូលីសបាននិយាយដោយត្រង់ៗថា «ពួកគេមិនចូលចិត្តញូសៀលេនទេ»។ ក្រុមមន្រ្តីទាំងនោះប្រហែលជាបានដឹងរឿងតិចតួចអំពីព្រឹត្តិការណ៏មួយនេះក្រៅពីអ្វីដែលពត៌មានបានចុះផ្សាយ។
វាពិតជាមានការឆ្គាំឆ្គងខ្លាំងណាស់ នៅរាល់ពេលដែលយើងប្រាប់ថាពួកយើងគឺជាជនជាតិ ញូសៀលេន។ ស្រមៃមើលដូចយើងចាប់ផ្ដើមកិច្ចសន្ទនាជាមួយនឹងឃ្លា «នៅក្នុងប្រទេសរបស់អ្នក បងប្អូនមូស្លីមរបស់ខ្ញុំត្រូវបានសម្លាប់នៅក្នុងការបាញ់រះ»។ ពួកយើងបានព្យាយាមពន្យល់ថាប្រទេសពួកយើងគឺចម្រុះជាតិសាសន៍ និងពោរពេញទៅដោយជាតិសាសន៍ផ្សេងៗគ្នា។

Election Night Party ជប់លៀងនៅយប់បោះឆ្នោត

Local elections in New Zealand aren’t that exciting, but here it was very festive. It was interesting to see big crowds outside the candidate’s office. The party included music, fireworks, flags and lots of police hanging around.

We were in Diyarbakir on election night and conveniently our host’s apartment was very close to an office. The crowd grew in size overnight and we could see clearly from above. At times people poured onto the street causing massive traffic jam.

One time we saw the police truck spraying water into the crowd. Luckily nothing serious happened because there were armed policemen everywhere. Extremely intimidating for the Kurdish people celebrating the victory result. After midnight the crowd dispersed and everyone went home.

ពួកយើងនៅ ឌីយ៉ាបាកឺ (Diyarbakir) នៅយប់បោះឆ្នោត ហើយជាភាពងាយស្រួលដល់ពួកយើង អឹផាតមិនរបស់អ្នកទទួលពួកយើងគឺស្ថិតនៅជិតនឹងការិយាល័យមួយ។ ហ្វូងមនុស្សបានកើនឡើងច្រើនទៅៗ នៅពេលយប់ ហើយពួកយើងអាចមើលឃើញយ៉ាងច្បាស់ពីលើមក។ នៅពេលខ្លះ ក្រុមហ្វូងមនុស្សបានហូរចាក់ទៅលើផ្លូវ បង្កទៅជាការស្ទះចរាចរណ៏យ៉ាងណែនណាន់។

នៅពេលមួយយើងឃើញ ឡានប៉ូលីសបាញ់ទឹកទៅលើហ្វូងមនុស្ស។ ជាសំណាងល្អ ដែលមិនមានគ្រោះថ្នាក់ធ្ងន់ធ្ងរកើតឡើង ដោយសារមានវត្តមានប៉ូលីសប្រដាប់ដោយអាវុធគ្រប់ទីកន្លែង។ វាពិតជាមានការគំរែមកំហែងដល់ជនជាតិ ឃឺតឌីស ក្នុងការប្រារព្ធលទ្ធផលជោគជ័យនេះ។ ក្រោយពាក់កណ្ដាលយប់ ហ្វូងមនុស្សបានបំបែកផ្លូវគ្នា ហើយម្នាក់ៗបានត្រលប់ទៅផ្ទះវិញ។

Taking the Little Road ការជិះផ្លូវតូច

Occasionally we forget about the importance of enjoying the journey over the destination. With so many routes to choose from it is tempting to choose the shortest and most direct. These are generally highways which bypasses every villages.

On two occasions we took the smaller roads, from Mersin to Nevşehir and Ankara to Bolu. Both times we were slow but absolutely enjoyed the quiet road. The road may be steep, damaged and windy, but seeing the villages and hidden natural beauty paid for the hard work.

We stopped for ice cream at a shop once, and the owner was confused why we took this road instead of the highway. He gave us direction to the highway, but he didn’t realize if we really wanted to visit the villages.

ពេលខ្លះពួកយើងភ្លេចពីសារៈសំខាន់ក្នុងការសប្បាយរីករាយក្នុងការធ្វើដំណើរ ជាងការទៅដល់គោលដៅ។ ជាមួយនឹងជម្រើសផ្លូវយ៉ាងច្រើន វាពិតជាមានភាពទាក់ទាញក្នុងការជ្រើសរើសផ្លូវណាដែលជិតជាងគេ ដែលភាគច្រើនជាផ្លូវហាយវ៉េ វាងភូមិអ្នកស្រុក។

មានពីរករណី ដែលយើងបានជ្រើសរើសយកផ្លូវតូច ពីមឺស៊ីន (Mersin) ទៅនេស៊ីហឺ (Nevsehir) និងពីអេនការ៉ា (Ankara) ទៅបូលូ (Bolu)។ ទាំងពីរពេល ការធ្វើដំណើរគឺសុទ្ឋតែយឺត ប៉ុន្តែពួកយើងសប្បាយចិត្តនឹងផ្លូវដែលស្ងាត់នេះ។ ផ្លូវអាចចោតខ្លាំង ខូចខាត និងមានខ្យល់ខ្លាំង ប៉ុន្តែការដែលបានមើលឃើញភូមិ និងសម្រស់ធម្មជាតិដែលលាក់ខ្លួន គឺ សាកសមនឹងការតស៊ូរបស់យើង។

យើងបានឈប់ដើម្បីញ៉ាំការ៉េមនៅហាងមួយ ហើយម្ចាស់ហាងមានការងឿងឆ្ងល់ថាហេតុអ្វីបានជាយើងរើសយកផ្លូវនេះ មិនយកផ្លូវហាយវ៉េ។ គាត់បានប្រាប់ពួកយើង ពីផ្លូវទៅកាន់ផ្លូវហាយវ៉េ ប៉ុន្តែគាត់មិនបានដឹងថាពួកយើងចង់ទៅកាន់ភូមិទេ។

Hot Air Balloons at Cappadocia បាឡុងខ្យល់ក្ដៅនៅ កាប៉ាដូស្យែ

This region is full of natural attractions, tourist busses and wonderful camping spots. With some luck, we got to stay in two different cave hotels for free. One hotel manager even drove us to see the balloons at 4:30 am. We felt extremely lucky.

Another day we explored the valleys together with a cycling couple from the Netherlands. On our bikes, we managed to cycle the Sunset valley, Love valley and Pigeon valley. It was a hot day but we really enjoyed ourselves and made some new friends.

តំបន់នេះគឺពោរពេញទៅដោយតំបន់ទេសចរណ៏ធម្មជាតិ រថយន្តក្រុងដឹកភ្ញៀវទេសចរ និងកន្លែងបោះតង់ល្អៗជាច្រើន។ ពួកយើងមានសំណាងដោយបានស្នាក់នៅក្នុងសណ្ឋាគាររូងភ្នំពីរ ដោយមិនបាច់បង់ប្រាក់។ អ្នកគ្រប់គ្រងសណ្ឋាគារម្នាក់ ថែមទាំងបានបើករថយន្តជូនយើងទៅមើលបាឡុងនៅម៉ោង៤កន្លះទាបភ្លឺទៀត។ ពួកយើងពិតជាសំណាងខ្លាំងណាស់។

ថ្ងៃមួយទៀត ពួកយើងបានធ្វើដំណើរទៅលេងជ្រលងភ្នំជាមួយនឹងអ្នកជិះកង់ដែលជាគូនឹងគ្នាមកពីប្រទេសហូឡង់ (The Netherlands)។ ដោយជិះកង់របស់យើង ពួកយើងបានទៅដល់ ជ្រលងភ្នំថ្ងៃលិច (Sunset Valley) ជ្រលងភ្នំស្នេហា (Love Valley) និងជ្រលងភ្នំព្រាប (Pigeon Valley)។ វាជាថ្ងៃក្តៅ ប៉ុន្តែពួកយើងពិតជារីករាយនឹងខ្លូនឯង ថែមទាំងបានស្គាល់មិត្តភក្តិថ្មីមួយចំនួនទៀត។

We’re sad to say goodbye to Asia. It’s been an amazing 15 months cycling journey. The next and last part of our tour is Europe! We enter through Bulgaria and finish in Portugal around October.
